A set of 40 x A5 grade-specific Levelled Readers.

Design features of the Levelled Readers include:

• Clear notation of the grade, language, language level, reader level, theme and title on covers

• 5 x levels of books per grade, determined by text length, complexity of concepts, phonics limitations and language structures and conventions used

• Organisation of books into broad themes across Grades 1-3, to widen and deepen learners’ topic knowledge

• Non-fiction texts include captioned and labelled illustrations

The Levelled Readers are designed to engage learners, to develop their curiosity, to reinforce language learning, to build their knowledge and to encourage a love of books and reading.

Teachers are guided to introduce certain levels to learners per term, in keeping with phonic and LSC development. However, teachers are also encouraged to allow learners to choose books from any level from time to time. This process is important to encourage autonomy and interest in terms of reading.

The Levelled Readers are referenced in the Teaching Plans as part of the Phonics & Reading lessons. Once learners have completed the daily activities in the Core Reader, they should move on to reading a Levelled Reader.
