Our Story.

Built from experience, courage and purpose.

Sometimes the most meaningful change begins quietly, with a shared conviction that something better can be built.

Lighthouse Publishers was born from that conviction. For years, educators, curriculum specialists, literacy experts, writers and creative professionals working across South African education had seen both the immense potential of our classrooms and the very real challenges faced by teachers and learners each day. They had seen the determination of teachers working with limited support, the eagerness of children ready to learn, and the need for materials that could do more than simply cover the curriculum.

They believed children deserved books that inspired confidence, sparked curiosity and made learning feel possible from the very beginning. They believed teachers deserved resources that were practical, clear, curriculum-aligned and genuinely helpful in the pace and pressure of everyday classrooms.

When the national catalogue process reopened after more than fifteen years, it created a rare opportunity for new energy and new thinking to enter the system.

Lighthouse Publishers was formally established in June 2024 to meet that moment, bringing together decades of combined experience and a network of trusted people united by purpose.

What followed was an extraordinary season of work. More than 130 contributors came together in a remarkably short space of time, including systems developers, writers, editors, illustrators, curriculum experts, designers and project managers. They worked long hours, solved problems quickly, refined drafts repeatedly and poured themselves into every page. Families made sacrifices, friends backed the vision and professionals took risks because they believed the effort mattered.

Out of that collective commitment came more than a catalogue submission. What emerged was a publishing house built on courage, experience, collaboration and hope for what South African education can become.

That is Lighthouse.
