Reading and mathematics confidence begin with strong foundations.
The Foundation Phase is where futures begin. In the first years of school, children learn far more than letters and numbers. They begin to form beliefs about themselves, about learning and about whether school is a place where they can succeed. Confidence is built early, and so too are the gaps that can follow a child for years if the right support is not there in time.
South Africa knows the urgency of this challenge. Too many learners continue to struggle to read, and then to read for meaning, to engage deeply with text and to build the language and literacy confidence needed for later success. Behind every statistic is a child with potential waiting to be unlocked and a teacher working hard to make that happen.
That is why Lighthouse chose to begin here. First and foremost, our language resources are designed to support teachers to explicitly and systematically teach reading, writing and comprehension skills. All language resources are policy aligned, ATP aligned and practical for real classrooms. In addition, they are carefully designed to give learners books that are joyful, beautifully illustrated, engaging and age-appropriate.
Mathematics matters just as deeply. In these early years, children learn what numbers represent and how they work, how patterns repeat, how quantities can be measured and compared, and how problems can be solved. Our mathematics resources are built around conceptual development, clear progression and evidence-based pedagogy. This means our resources support teachers as they take learners through concrete experimentation to working with representational strategies, so that learners have a solid understanding of concepts before moving to the abstract forms of mathematics.
When a child learns to read fluently and with understanding, and to count and manipulate numbers without fear, the path ahead begins to change. That is the difference strong foundations can make.
