The Lighthouse Mathematics programme is designed to teach learners maths skills with understanding. This means that learners engage with and experience all concepts in a concrete manner first, before moving on to representational and abstract forms of Mathematics. In addition, regular, repeated strategies are implemented to help internalise and develop Mathematical thinking.

These include:

• Procedural fluency to ensure that learners can recall and implement procedures automatically and accurately

• Strategic competence which enables learners to select the appropriate strategies to solve problems

• Mathematical reasoning skills, developed by routinely working with learners to reflect on, explain and justify mathematical choices
